The Seashell Box

Before our class recieved this project, I hadn’t really thought about ancestors.  This box has given me new insight and helped me learn about them.  I now know a lot more about who they were, where they lived, and some of the things they liked to do.  My great great grandmother, Clara Campbell, homemade this box, and gave it to her daughter for Christmas.  It was covered with sea shells which could have been bought at a store, or found at a beach.  I never could find that information.  There were little plates inside the box, and I have been informed that they were made by my great grandmother, Stella Campbell.

  1. The plates were made?  I remember looking at them, and they don’t look handmade.  Do you know how they were made?
Another question:  What about this idea of giving not of money but of yourself for a gift.  Do we do that?  Would we value that?

  2. You have a great great grandmother, named campbell? maby your rich somewhere for the soup, campbell.  But anyway, why did she make this, is there a reason for her making this other then she needed a box of jewlery? or did she actualy want to make a family heirloom?

  3. I like how your greatgrandma made gifts for her kids for Christmas, that must have meant a lot to them.  It’s also very neat how your great grandma made little plates for the kids.

  4. It’s nice that you were able to receive something that was made by your great-great-grandmother, as you are from a huge family. How do you think the fact that Stella made this gift has shaped your family values?

  5. Mrs. Rasmussen - My father and grandmother said that Stella Cambell made ornaments and other things and she sold them.  This was in the later years of her life, but my father has some of the other things she made also.  I don’t know how they were made.
To answer your other question, I think that if people actually did give homemade gifts, or just did nice things for people, they would appreciate it much better.  People now tend to think “the bigger the better”.  They think that if the present is more expensive, it will be appreciated more.  I don’t know about other people, but I would rather have something from the heart.

  6. Chase - I don’t really think I am related to someone in the campbell soup business, but I guess it is possible. She just made the box for a present, no other reason I guess.

  7. Brianne - Actually, Clara Campbell made this box, and she gave it to Stella.  I think this homemade present has helped shape my family values by making me realize that what I do now, will affect people in the future.  This in not only by what I own (like the jewelry box), but also by what I teach my children, and they, in turn, will teach their children.

  8. Carly - Thanks Carly.  I also think it’s neat how my great great grandmother made gifts for her kids.
