A Narrative History of the Montana Heritage Project

Connecting Heritage and Art

Jeri Malatare

St. Ignatius High School

1996-97

Students were exposed to community learning in just about every aspect of this art class. Specific studio activities such as making batik were tied to family heritage; field trips to local graveyards combined history and art in the form of grave stone rubbings; tours of local buildings after completing an architecture unit let students apply architectural appreciation to their own downtown; and students learned about the business of art by organizing an art show for seventeen area artists.
