A Narrative History of the Montana Heritage Project
Literary Magazine
Mary Sullivan
Bigfork High School1998-99
Students in Bigfork published a literary magazine, Voices from the Millennium. Michael Umphrey worked with students to write essays of place, and Mark Gibbons presented ideas about heritage essays. In addition to essays from these workshops, the magazine included a wide variety of poetry and prose. Each member of the junior class submitted at least one piece of writing, and many had multiple submissions. Bigfork students also continued the mentor relationships they established during the previous year’s study of the 20s. They prepared a dinner for their mentors, and after singing a medley of 20s music and serving the mentors’ favorite dishes they had time to reminisce with their historical guides.
