A Narrative History of the Montana Heritage Project

Oral History of World War II Veterans

Darlene Beck

Broadwater High School

Students at Broadwater High School in Townsend spent two months conducting research into World War II, followed by collecting oral histories from local veterans. They honored veterans of all wars at a Veteran’s Recognition Night, featuring speeches, poetry, music, refreshments and television crews. They used the publicity generated to identify more veterans as interview subjects. They completed video and audio tapes of the interviews, a book of photographs collected from veterans, a collection of writings and tape transcripts and a history of their project. They also created a quilt featuring pictures of veterans who helped with the project which will hang as tribute to Broadwater County veterans in the school/community library.
