A Narrative History of the Montana Heritage Project
The ALERT Model and the Lewis and Clark Journey
Sarah Reeve
St. Ignatius Middle School1997-98
Students explored the Lewis and Clark journey using the ALERT model (Ask, Listen, Explore, Reflect, Transform). Students then applied what they learned of the journey to their own lives and community and interviewed local people to learn about their own personal journeys into the unknown. Students compiled their research and learning into three projects: one was to create a journal of Lewis and Clark’s trip, taking on the voice of any expedition member; the second was to present a skit about one component of the ALERT model; the third was to interview local people about their own journeys and to document their findings. In the spring, students learned the art of writing an essay of place.
