A Narrative History of the Montana Heritage Project

Using the Past to Create Contemporary Stories

Lori Bremer
Helen Mackay

Red Lodge High School

In this two-staged project students from one class were guided to research the history of mining, agriculture, art and ethnic origins in their community and then to interview elders to gain their insights. The second class used this historic research about local places and people and visited their study subjects to create research based stories. Since stories were designed in a creative writing class, stories, poems and even a film script were produced.
