A Narrative History of the Montana Heritage Project

Video Documentation of Students, Parents, and Grandparents

Valerie Umphrey

St. Ignatius Elementary School

1997-98

Fifth graders at St. Ignatius Elementary School finished the project they began as fourth graders. Students created a three generation family history video that involved students, parents and other family members working together at home and in the classroom. The project brought parents into better contact with what their kids were doing in school and helped Valerie get to know the families of the kids she worked with during the school year. Videos included family photographs, student autobiographies, special family music, and interviews with parents and or grand parents. Working as a family, students and parents chose what to put in their family video.
