Darlene Beck

Darlene Beck has incorporated a variety of Montana Heritage Projects in her junior and senior level English classes at Broadwater High School in Townsend, Montana. She finds that being involved with the project inspires her as a teacher and helps kindle students’ minds in the classroom.
After receiving her Bachelors degree in English from Montana State University, Darlene pursued her first teaching job in Townsend, where she found it easy to fit into the community.  Although she and Jim, her husband, lived in eastern Montana for six years, they were eager to return to Townsend to raise their two children.
After receiving her elementary education certification, Darlene taught in the Townsend school for 14 years before completing her master’s degree and returning to the high school to teach English and coach speech and drama.  It was then that she was first introduced to the Montana Heritage Project.  She feels the project has been a perfect opportunity for students, community members and her.
I love the project because it’s all about who I am—a teacher in a small community.  My life is all about community—it’s about 239 students in our high school –it’s about my church family, the extra curricular activities, the quilt group, the veterans, the historical society and the parents of my students.  I like going to the post office, the bank, and the grocery store and knowing nearly everyone.  I like helping community members make a connection with students and I love seeing students become an integral part of the community
