Online school offers high school dipomas

Montana’s first online school, Abaetern Academy will offer single courses or a complete program leading to a high school diploma. The courses are reasonably priced.

I would think such a school could be valuable for students who need a particular class, such as a writing course needed for graduation. This need has been met by correspondence courses for years, but an online class could provide a much richer environment.

Online courses work best for students who have adults at their site monitoring their work habits. This could be done at school or by parents at home. Hybrid courses, in which the instruction is done online but an adult is involved in the course on the student’s end, are probably the strongest model. Existing schools and libraries are natural settings for online courses, and I hope teachers and administrators at brick and mortar schools will step forward and help work out such details.

There’s a lot for all of us to learn, and a lot for kids to gain. Traditional high schools don’t work for some kids for all sorts of reasons and it makes sense to provide many ways for people to continue learning. In a state as rural as Montana, the Internet has a tremendous role to play in how we educate our youth.
