Profile of Becky Duty

My name is Becky Duty and I am currently the high school English and art teacher at Brady Public School. I grew up on a ranch in Stevensville, graduated from Western Montana College in 1989, and taught in Belgrade and Broadus before coming to Brady. During these years my husband and I had three children who are now 13,11,and 7. We enjoy camping, hiking, skiing, wildlife, and always seem to have one project or another on the back burner, either for 4-H or just for our family.

I have taught many elective classes including yearbook, photography, stained glass, and drama in addition to the language arts and fine arts. Blending these courses of study with social studies provides meaning for students. I believe in involving the learner and learning from my students. If I can branch off from the ordinary and go to deeper levels in my classes using both creativity and critical thinking, the student will become the teacher as well as the learner.

My art students have participated in the American Legion Auxiliary Poppy Poster contest for the past ten years. We have had at least six state winners for the Poppy Posters and several Poppy Corsage winners on the state level. This project has taught my students art methods and critical thinking skills; they have also come to value the veterans who sacrificed their lives for our freedom. I have assisted other staff members for six years as we have hosted our annual Veteran’s Day program. The communities of Brady and Conrad have appreciated our efforts to recognize and thank veterans.
I am excited to be involved with the Montana Heritage Project and see students actually interview veterans in our community. They have honored veterans through art and Veteran’s Day programs; now is the time for young people to interact with the veterans and record their lives.
