The Life and Times of Colleen Green

On April 5, 1956, the nurses at St. Patrick’s Hospital in Missoula Montana told my mother to hang on and get ready. Her new bundle of joy had made her not-so-quiet and not-so-easy entrance into this world. One would not know it today, but I weighed nine pounds thirteen ounces when I made my entry into this world. My mother did not know what to think about my size, and I’m certain the nurses did not know whether to give me a bottle or throw me a bale of hay. Throughout my developmental years, and through most of my adult life, I have kept my mother guessing about my me and my life in general.

I grew up in Missoula, Montana and attended St. Anthony’s Catholic Grade School and Paxson Grade School. Sacred Heart Academy in downtown Missoula provided me a fine secondary education. Unfortunately, I decided to pursue “clowndom” and di not take my high school education too seriously.  Thus, when I enrolled at the University of Montana, I did not receive a great deal of money for my academic abilities or aptitude.  Against all odds and what the nuns thought I would end up doing, I graduated from the University of Montana in 1980 with an HPE degree and a minor in special education after earning Dean’s List status.

The Simms High School District saw potential in me, so I began my tenure as a teacher in the fall of 1980 at Simms High School. At the end of my first year, I met the man of my dreams, we dated for six weeks, got engaged in June and married in August of 1981. Between 1982 and 1985, God sent us two precious gifts in the form of our son, Mike, and daughter, Sarah. Motherhood did not tie me down nor tire me out, so I continued to teach and coach full time for the Sun River Valley Schools. In my spare time, I earned a Masters Degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Montana in 1995.

Bill, my husband, has retired from teaching, Sarah will graduate from Dillon this spring, and Mike attends MSU-Bozeman this year as a freshman. My life continues to roll on, and I have no intention of slowing down soon.
